Family Matters: The In-Laws Condo

Andrea MaaseideComment

Steve and I have been going to my in-law's place in Kiawah Island, SC at least once a year since we started dating.  To me, Kiawah Island is the definition of summer.  It's the perfect spot for a family vacation.

I've been working on my in-law's new property down there since last October.  They've bought the most beautiful condo and they've gutted it and reconfigured it so that it has a more open concept plan, as well as a loft space for additional sleeping.

I'll be doing a lot of posts on the project as there's finally a lot to share.  I thought I'd start with the main living room.  Here's some pictures of the project in progress.  The first two are views of the kitchen and living area, as well as the old screened in porch turned sunroom (last picture).

Here's the same space just last week.  Progress!!!! That's the bank of windows I was referring to in the architectural renderings.

Here's how the space will be divided.

Here's a CAD drawing that I did.  I don't have all of the doors and windows in, but you can get a sense of the space with the planned furniture layout.

Given the open concept of the condo, we want the furniture to contribute to that light and airy feel.  No really heavy pieces, strong colors or, at my in-law's request, blues or grays.  My mother-in-law loves the color green, so I decided to run with that and go with a palette of green and soft neutrals, which will relate beautifully to the spectacular view of the outdoors.   Again, here's the plan for the living room:

The console will go behind one of the sofas with the two ottomans tucked underneath for extra seating, as needed.

The whites in the living room will tie in with the kitchen.  We went with a more modern aesthetic in the kitchen - flat front cabinetry with minimal hardware and stainless steel appliances.  Everything in shades of white.  It will be really light and bright.  Definitely a place we will want to hang out!
