Andrea Maaseide Design

In An English Country Garden

Andrea MaaseideComment

Yesterday Andrea and I met with a new client at her lovely home in McLean. As we came down the driveway, it was like being on an English country road.  The house looked like it had been lifted from the English countryside and placed on the most prefect plot of land here in the States.

So... this is so not the client's house, but I wanted you to get a visual!! =) {Via Pinterest}

The client would like to install some wallpaper in her entry hall, dining room, and master bedroom. She appreciates many different styles of design - from art nouveau and arts and crafts to a more modern vibe.

Taking notes from the home and the client's aesthetic Andrea and I immediately thought of the wonderful wallpapers from Marthe Armitage.  Marthe is a Chiswick, UK based artist that creates and hand prints her original wallpapers from lino blocks in her studio.

We think her timeless wallpapers will work with the variety of styles reflected in our client's home.  This amazing video captures the beauty of Marthe's work and her artistic process.

Apparently, Marthe didn't even begin to gain recognition until her mid-70's!

The Chestnut print is definitely our favorite! According to the Bible of British Taste, Marthe made Chestnut for a friend who wanted to see foliage when she awoke in her urban bedroom. We love the variety of black and gray tones against the white background.  It's a classic design with a modern palette.

 Of course, it's amazing in this blue and white color way, too.  It would be hard to choose between the two!!

The muted blues and greens in "Angelica" are simply perfect.  According to an interview with T Magazine, Marthe said she prefers..."muted colors...but not namby-pamby."  Love!  This whimsical design would be wonderful in our client's master bedroom and it would bring her appreciation for the outdoors in, both in pattern and through the soft color palette.

A lot of Marthe's designs appear to be inspired by gardens, but her work also incorporates wallpapers like this superb Chinoiserie.  A recurring design throughout history, this Chinoiserie would be a wonderful addition to the many historical details in our client's home.

Marthe is a true gem and her works are to be treasured!  For more information on Marthe, I'd recommend a wonderful article by the Bible of British taste.  You can find the article here.  Definitely worth a read!

Cheers!
