Big & Graphic

Andrea MaaseideComment

Black and white - one the absence of all color and one the presence of all color.  Can you guess which is which?  In the visible spectrum, black is the absence of all color and white is the presence of all color.  Totally confusing, right?  My fingerprinting days would have led me to believe that black was the presence of all color given the muddy creations you can concoct when you mix colors together.  Oh well.  We don't really need to know the science behind all of this.  We just need to know that the two together make a completely striking pair.

I was reminded of my black and white obsession the other night when I was watching one of those fluffy TV shows on Bravo.  In the background, I spotted a huge black and white print.  Big, bold, and graphic.. and perfect!  There's beauty in simplicity, right?

The overall design here is so clean.  The large black and white artwork adds just enough drama.  VIa Houzz

The incredibly talented Erin Gates of Elements of Style did this black and white piece herself for her guest bedroom.  A great project for your DIYers out there! {Via Elements of Style Blog}

You don't need color.  Mix your black and white piece with lots of different elements - metals, furs, shiny matte, glass, etc.  It creates a striking vignette.  {Via Pinterest}

Just a splash of yellow in this design.

One of our favorite vendors,Natural Curiosities, has some great black and white print options if you want to add this look in your own home.  A few years ago, I was gifted this print by Paule Marrot, a French engraver, painter, and textile artist and a featured Natural Curiosities artist.  It's so fantastic in person!

These are a great pair with "strong lines and clean abstract imagery"!

If you're looking for less expensive options, Minted has some wonderful choices.
