Classic Print GOES MODERN: "Houndstooth"

Andrea MaaseideComment

The trench coat.  The little black dress.  Ballet flats.  All classic elements of fashion.  Interior design also has its  classics.  Patterns like suzani, ikat, damask, tree of life, toile, fretwork, and even houndstooth.  These never go out of style, but like the trench coat and little black dress, these patterns are always being reinterpreted and reinvented to keep them fresh.

One of my personal favorites, the houndstooth dates back to the early 1900's. Houndstooth is a two toned pattern characterized by broken checks, or abstract four pointed shapes, most commonly in black and white.

Dorothy Draper, one of the most famous American interior decorators, sports a classic houndstooth print in this this photo taken in the early 1930's.  Photo from the archives of Dorothy Draper & Co.

To update this classic pattern, designers have played with scale...

The big bold wallpaper I found on Etsy is a great statement wall. And the tile floor is a modern twist on the classic.

This large scale houndstooth is lovely in this modern kid's room. And love this color combination! {Via Houzz}

...and with color, creating unexpected color combinations.

Trina Turk had some fun reinventing houndstooth with her "Jax" indoor/ outdoor fabric.

Talk about a modern twist...check out these crazy wallpapers from Zoov.

You could always stick to the classic black and white, but apply it in an unexpected way.
