The trench coat. The little black dress. Ballet flats. All classic elements of fashion. Interior design also has its classics. Patterns like suzani, ikat, damask, tree of life, toile, fretwork, and even houndstooth. These never go out of style, but like the trench coat and little black dress, these patterns are always being reinterpreted and reinvented to keep them fresh.
One of my personal favorites, the houndstooth dates back to the early 1900's. Houndstooth is a two toned pattern characterized by broken checks, or abstract four pointed shapes, most commonly in black and white.
To update this classic pattern, designers have played with scale...
...and with color, creating unexpected color combinations.
Trina Turk had some fun reinventing houndstooth with her "Jax" indoor/ outdoor fabric.
Talk about a modern twist...check out these crazy wallpapers from Zoov.
You could always stick to the classic black and white, but apply it in an unexpected way.
