Animal Love

Within ten minutes of arriving at Aquila Private Game Reserve yesterday, I was within a foot of this beautiful cheetah.

Don't freak out about the wires.  He is currently in an enclosed space, but it's because he's in the Animal Rescue Center on the reserve after being shot at by poachers. He's on the road to recovery.

Aquila Game Reserve is about two hours away from Cape Town.  Admittedly the actual experience felt more like Disney's Animal Kingdom than a genuine African safari, but it didn't make the animals any less breathtaking.

Those eyes!! This guy came quite close to our jeep... I cracked up when two men squealed out loud and jumped back as the lion approached us. I may have squealed a bit, too.

These two male bulls started approaching the jeep in front of us.  There was concern they were "charging", so all of the jeep drivers were quickly backing out of the way.  Thankfully it didn't approach the level of the panicked tourists in Sri Lanka.

I was just as fascinated by this tree as I was by the zebras.  The entire scene was captivating.

The hippos were cozying up to one another.  Apparently they do this when the temperatures are cooler.  See the jeep in the background... totally Animal Kingdom, right?

After a two hour drive around the game reserve and plenty of animal sighting, we had lunch at the lodge. Loved the lighting in the lodge!

These pendants remind me of Louise Tuckers woven lights.

At lunch I spotted these beaded wire animal busts and fell in love.

I know I'm from Texas... land of hunters and genuine animal trophies, but these sculptural pieces are much more my speed.  They are so beautiful in person.  I found a few vendors online.  There are pieces out there for more sophisticated spaces...

and more playful spaces. These would be adorable in a nursery.

I'm keeping my eyes open for these in Cape Town.  Maybe I'll bring a "trophy" home with me.
