Reclaim it

I was reading through House Beautiful yesterday and came across this gorgeous kitchen with this fantastic reclaimed wood island.

I love the look of reclaimed wood.  It really adds such a wonderful warmth and texture to a space, which is why we thought it would be perfect for a pilates studio that we are working on in Northern VA.  The reclaimed wood will be a perfect play against the industrial vibe going on in the space, including these super cool turbine pendant lights in the reception area.

Of course this meant searching for a vendor that could build some really cool pieces for us - a reception desk and shelving unit for clients' stuff -  using reclaimed wood.  Enter Strong Oaks Woodshop.  I found this vendor on Etsy (I LOVE Etsy!) and Mike, the owner, offered up his talent and some lovely grey reclaimed wood from a barn in upstate NY.  Sold!

The reception desk will look something like this:

This is actually a reception desk from another vendor on Etsy.  Unfortunately, they are out of Canada, which meant insane freight charges.

I went to check out the reclaimed wood from upstate NY in person and to see their workshop and the quality of their work.  I wasn't disappointed.

The workshop is housed in a beautiful, old building out in Front Royal, VA.

The reclaimed wood... the color is just perfect.

The workshop was buzzing and they had some really lovely pieces in progress, including these two custom tables.

And a bar with a cool metal base and some custom chairs.

I just heard from Mike that the reception desk and the shelving unit for the pilates studio are nearly done.  I'll update with some pics as soon as I have them, and of course pics of the pilates studio when it's complete (a couple more months).
